Why Should I Work on My LinkedIn?

There’s countless reasons why LinkedIn is a critical tool as a career professional and especially as a job-seeker, but there’s no better time than now to get started on it.

Cyberspace Became the New “Normal”

In today’s digital age (even more-so during this pandemic period), the best way to cast a wide net and build your network efficiently is through your online presence. In person events are becoming fewer and harder to come by as people are turning to digital sources to network.

And, this trend doesn’t seem to be curbing anytime soon.

The world is changing rapidly before our eyes, and the opportunities for your future goals and connections are rushing to get on LinkedIn, which is frankly great news for you as long you know how to access them.

Of course, getting recognized online takes more than just having a likable personality, great work experience and connections, but the reach is endless.

The “Great Reshuffle” isn’t Stopping

While there were countless tragic events of the pandemic, the silver lining known as the “Great Reshuffle” and “Great Resignation” allowed career professionals and job-seekers to reprioritize their values and needs from their careers.

Gone are the days where it was normal to stay stuck in a job that you hate to pay the bills.

The U.S. Department of Labor reported that over 4.5 million people quit their jobs in November, up from 4.2 million in October of 2021, with 10.6 million job openings on the market.

It’s a job-seekers market - meaning it’s safe for you to let go of the ground under your feet and start searching if you feel inclined to do so!

Salaries are hiking up, and employers are becoming desperate to keep their talents happy and to attract new candidates.

Transform Your LinkedIn Profile

It’s a competitive world out there. In order to succeed, you must stand out from the crowd! You are what you present and your LinkedIn profile is often your first impression and digital introduction. Does it portray you in the best light?

Does it feel authentic and genuine? If you were a visitor, would you like to get to know you solely based on your profile?

With approximately 70 million active users on LinkedIn daily, it’s important to make sure you craft your profile in a way that steals the attention of your recruiters, potential connections or peers in a matter of seconds.

Transforming your profile to speak in a way that resonates and sounds like you is the best way to highlight your uniqueness.

It’s also a great opportunity to weave your experience into a personal (yet still professional) story.

Get an Optimized LinkedIn Profile That Works for You

LinkedIn profile optimization is a little bit complicated as it involves optimizing for your audience tastes and the algorithm that ranks your profile in a search.

To cater your profile to your audience, a few important questions to ask yourself when designing and writing your profile is:

  • Who am I? Authenticity is key. While it’s important to maintain professionalism, it’s just as critical to sound like yourself.

  • Who am I trying to attract? Are they recruiters, hiring managers, connections, mentors, clients? This is a key element in defining the tone of your profile, second to your personality.

  • What defines my professional style? Who am I in a team environment? Are you a collaborator, problem solver, networker, leader, persuader, builder, or organizer?

  • What kind of people do I tend to get along with? Don’t be afraid to get a little personal and share your hobbies, side projects, volunteer work, passions and interests. It’s the perfect conversation starter.

The algorithm is complex with many factors that determine where you show up in someone’s search. However, there’s a few key elements that your profile should cover:

  • Fields - To the best of your knowledge try to fill in as many fields on the profile template as possible. The more complete your profile, the higher the algorithm tends to favor you as it can find more relations based on different search queries.

  • SEO - every search engine requires keyword optimization. The tactics of the early 2000s of spamming the top keywords that you want to rank for, however, no longer apply to these new systems. Make sure you research a few top keywords that you’d like to rank for, with varying search volumes to include in your profile.

  • Activity - Interacting with other users, posts, articles through commenting or sharing, or creating your own content is another way to increase your visibility.

Now, this is enough to get you started on your LinkedIn journey, but speaking from experience, there’s many nuances to finding success on the platform.

Since 2016, I’ve helped entrepreneurs and small business owners turn their LinkedIn profiles into a Lead Magnet, generating leads and filling their pipelines. I’ve taught them how to create referral partnerships and an online presence that they’re proud of.

I don’t just copy and paste resumes into LinkedIn profiles. Resumes are about your career past; your LinkedIn profile is all about your FUTURE.

It's who you are, how you help people, and why you deserve to be noticed. I craft POWERFUL LinkedIn Profiles that tell your professional story in an engaging, high-level manner.

I work with SEO, content strategy, and metrics to help clients design a viable and long-term plan for achieving their goals using LinkedIn.

The digital market becomes more competitive by the day as we've transitioned into the “new normal” that demands we continue to maintain physical distances and find ways to connect through our devices.

There’s truly no better time than now, in a surplus job market and during this shift, to land yourself the career that you’ve always wanted.
